Each name that is engraved onto Lord Stanley is stamped a single letter at a time. It's said to average of 30 minutes per name and over 28 hours to engrave the 52 names onto the trophy.

Owner Peter Pocklington tried to have his fathers name engarved on the cup (which isn't allowed). When the League found out, they stamped out his name (Bazil Pocklington) with a series of X's. This, amoung many other features, is a way to verify that you're actually looking at the authentic Cup.
